U Know Me Better

Words can not describe the awesomeness of Róisín Murphy, so I will let the music speak for it self. Check out her new single You Know Me Better. The remixes are just ok, with Toddla taking the prize. Make sure to check a superb fan made video for the song (official vid should be out soon), and a totally hilarious video of Róisín in a street performance of the song. Only Róisín can have such guts to do this.

THE Best Album of 2007 >> Alive 2007

Daft Punk's Alive 2007 is hands down my absolute favorite 2007 album. It was released on November 19, 2007. It is the second album recorded live by Daft Punk, following Alive 1997. Alive 2007 features their performance at Bercy in Paris from June 14, 2007.

The live album takes awesome Daft Punk songs and magically makes them much more awesome. Each song contains elements of a couple of Daft Punk songs, and you can hear the raw energy and feel it in your body. Even if you are not a Daft Punk fan, you have to listen to these.

JIMMMMMMMMMMMMY

I must admit that even with all the critical acclaim it garnered, I only liked a few songs off M.I.A's KALA album. But these few songs were absolutely amazing. Jimmy is one of those songs that grab you from the first listen and do not let go. The song is a complete paradox. Musically, it is so upbeat and happy. Yet, the lyrics combine the traditional decades old Indian folklore song with some serious stuff like the start of the song:

'When you go Rwanda Congo, Take me on ya genocide tour,

Take me on a truck to Darfur, Take me where you would go'

Fallen King

For me, music is more than just entertainment. Good music gets me to think and feel. I have always been a sucker for good lyrics (hence my love for Tori and Bjork). Currently, I am struggling with issues both professionally and personally and the following two songs' lyrics pierce into my mind and soul whenever I hear them. Enjoy the downloads.

DOWNLOAD >>  Hard-Fi - The King

In this town >> I used to be The King here

Now I don't mean a thing here >> Where did it all go wrong?

I look around >> And no one knows my face here

I feel so out of place here >> Where did it all go wrong?

Nowhere is home and I feel old

My clothes are torn my heart is cold

With you I was The King >> With you my heart would sing
But now my story's done >> Now I'm no one
But once I was The King

DOWNLOAD >>   Duran Duran - Falling Down

Once was a man who consumed his place and time >> He thought nothing could touch him >>  But here and now it’s a different storyline >> Like the straw he is clutching

Why has the sky turned gray? >> Hard to my face and cold on my shoulder >> And why has my life gone astray? >> Scarred by disgrace, I know that its over

Because I’m falling down >> With people standing round >> But before I hit the ground >> Is there time? >> Could I find someone out there to help me?

>> The post picture is from the excellent movie The King, I have edited and manipulated it.

Apple Commercial Magic >> Yael Naim

I just noticed that Yael Naïm has debuted at #2 on iTunes songs chart with 'New Soul'. It is quite an achievement that got me curious as to what prompted this instant success. After a quick investigation I found out that her song is used in the new MacBook Air commercial. All hail the power of the Apple!!!

Apple MacBook Air commercial

I've been quite familiar with Yael for over a year. Even before her newfound commercial fame, she made her debut here within the first week of this blog's existence.  I featured a video of her excellent cover of Britney's 'Toxic'  (see Piece of Britney).

For those who do not know her (most people), Yael Naim was born in Paris in 1978 to Jewish-Tunisian parents (Arab Jew). At the age of four, she moved with her family to Ramat HaSharon, Israel, where she learned Hebrew and trained as a pianist. Her first solo album, In A Man's Womb, was released in 2001 and her second, Yael Naim, was released in October, 2007 in France peaking at number 11. Her style has been described as having a touch of folk and jazz, with mysterious and evocative words sung with a delicate and intentionally slightly husky voice. I myself find traces of Fiest, Sia, a lil Bjork instrument experimentation, Imogen Heap (Frou Frou) and Natasha Bedingfield in her songs. She delivers the goods and I believe she is worthy of this instant fame bestowed upon her by his highness, Steve. I put five English songs from her new album below, give your ears a treat!

Dance Dance Dance

It's the weekend y'all. Time to dance dance dance! The Freemasons have turned recent Beyonce songs (Beautiful Liar, Ring the Alarm, Greenlight, Deja Vu) into storming club bangers. And now they have worked their magic on her former bandmate Kelly's new single Work. The result is so amazing you can not help but start dancing right away. I am patiently awaiting their new remix of Kylie's 'The One' to be out (Listen to snippet here). I also included a hot mix of Rihanna's Don't Sop The Music which is in the top 5 in both UK and US this week. DSTM is hands down the most dancable song of last year. I round things out with Spencer & Hill rocking edit of Cascada's What Hurts The Most.

Free Download >> Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend is made up by a group of recent Columbia University graduates. Their sound merges their Preppy college background with elements of Indie Rock, Afrobeats and African pop! It is quirky indie music at its finest. As a celebration of their self-titled debut being released on iTunes (Tuesday, Jan 29) and their introduction to a national audience on David Letterman (Friday, Feb 1) you can download a legal free MP3 of their breakout song that introduced them to the blogsphere ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa ‘ here.

‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa ‘ (named after a Congolese dance style about seducing a girl on her fancy Benetton linens) is a musically sparse, uplifting and catching tune that manages to namecheck Peter Gabriel, Louis Vuitton, at least two types of English tea and Manhattan bus routes.

Free New Song >> Sophie Ellis Bextor

Sophie Ellis Bextor has asked her management (Wallace Productions) and record company (Fascination Records) to make availabe a free new song 'Love is the law' on her official site as a way of apology for postponing her Spring tour. The song is pretty good with uptempo beats. Sophie is currently in the studio completing new tracks for an upcoming Greatest Hits album that is scheduled for late spring release. I think that is a super nice gesture towards the fans. Go Sophie!

Music >> JUNO >> Cute Ugly People

In celebration of Juno OST climbing to #1 on the Billboard Album chart this week, I am posting five of my favorite songs off the soundtrack. It is the first from an Academy Award best picture nominee since 1998 "Titanic" to reach the summit. The soundtrack is a nice collection of sweet and quirky indie and rock songs from Belle & Sebastian, the Kinks, Kimya Dawson (The Moldy Peaches), Velvet Underground and others. Honetsly, I don't like all the songs but the good ones more than makeup for the duds. I am glad that Belle & Sebastian's 'Piazza, New York Catcher' is getting exposure on this soundtrack as it is my favorite B&S song, and their 'Expections' is underrated and beautiful. The stand out track is 'Anyone Else But You' perfomed by actors Ellen Page and Michael Cera. I prefer it to The Moldy Peaches rendition but I included both.

"We sure are cute for two ugly people.."

Hidden Gem >> If You Forget Me

If You Forget Me is a rare Madonna gem composed of her spoken-word reading of a Pablo Neruda poem with oriental beats and the infamous Erotica line 'Give it up, do as I say. Give it up and let me have me way'. The beauty of the poem combined with the hypnotic beats and Madonna's unmistakable voice result in an amazing piece of art/music. It is very similar to the style of Justify My Love - The Beast Within mix, which is my all-time Madonna favorite mix.

Arab Aquarius Edits an Unfaithful Bad Girl

I have this habit of editing some long mixes by choosing the hot bits that I like so they can fit on an audio CD and listen to it in my friend's car when we go out (her player plays audio only). I love mixes, but at certain times you want a short & sweet edit with the good bits. Below are two edits I have made of two hot Rihanna mixes. The original Unfaithful mix is [9:11 min] and the Good Girl Gone Bad original Soul Seekers mix is [6:35 min]; my edits are [3:19 min] and [4:53 min], respectively.

Snoop vs. Robyn >> Sexual Eruption

This is my third post about Robyn in the first month of this blog. But how can I not post this? You're Wow Wow Wow Wow

Update: I added the F*ck Me I'm Famous David Guetta mix!

I felt bad posting mixes for In My Arms (see here) and neglecting current single Wow. Actually, In My Arms was supposed to be the current single but after Kylie performed Wow on the X-Factor and people started downloading it, her label decided to switch.

As the name suggests, it is a fun camp guilty-pleasure. Don't expect deep lyrics, the hook goes 'You got it, You're Wow Wow Wow Wow'. The CSS (from iTouch commercial, 'Music is My Hot Hot Sex' fame) mix is fun, fast and doesnt steer away from the original. MSTRKRAFT on the other hand, infuse it with hot beats, looping the 'rhythem when you're dancing, you know you're made in heaven' part and turn it into a proper banger. Finally, the Fuck Me I'm Famous mix is utterly and completely fantastic. David Guetta can do no wrong! The action starts at the 1:08 min mark.

The official video is set to debut January 30, Miss Minogue recently filmed it along with the future video for In My Arms in LA, California. Till then we can enjoy her fun performance of Wow on The Kylie Show TV special from November 2007.

Too Late to Apologize?

Apologize has hit oversaturation and most people are sick of it by now. BUT I have finally traced the person who made the stunning video. No, not the official (boring) video. This video was made by Aaron Platt on December 2006 just to promote his editing skills and garner attention. Yes, 2006!!! If you havent watched this video, you must. Below is the video he made using the original raw One Republic song; if you prefer watching this same video but with the Timbaland produced audio you can watch it HERE.

New Mix >> Erase/Rewind 2008

The Cardigans are one of my all time favorite bands. Most known for LoveFool the 'love me, love me, say that you love me. Fool me, fool me, go on and fool me' Romeo + Joliet soundtrack song. Kleerup, the featured artist on Robyn's smash With Every Heartbeat (see my previous post here) are releasing a new 2008 Cardigans remix of 'Erase/Rewind' (a #7 UK hit) from 1998 Gran Turismo album. A 10 year anniversary I guess. The dark kleerup beats combined with Nina's bittersweet vocals make for a hot hot mix!
